School: Externato Elvira Ramos 8ºAno A- Fundamental II English book summary: Sherlock Holmes Stories Name: Diogo Gagliano N: 4 City: São Paulo Date: 24/10/23 Chapter One An early morning visitor The case of the speckled band was one of Dr. Watson´s first investigations with Sherlock Holmes. It all happened in London when Miss Stoner decided to look for them and tell them everything that had happened. Her stepfather became a doctor and went to live in India where he met her mother, who was a widow and already hat two daughters. Her mother died and left a Good Fortune to her current husband and her daughters. When his daughters got married he was supposed to give them the money every year. She had left enough money for everyone. Her stepfather decided to return to live in England in his family´s old house, which had several rooms in a beautiful garden, he brought several wild animals to live with them in the house. She and her sister couldn´t have much fun because they had to clean the whole house, as no servants stopped. He had no visitors, he had almost no friends and his sisters were almost 30 years old. Chapter Two A dangerous death Sherlock Holmes asked her to tell him exactly what happened that night. The rooms are on the third floor, all on the same corridor, the first for Dr. Roylott, the second for Julia and the third for Helen. That night everyone went to bed early, but Julia still wasn´t sleepy and went to Helen´s room to talk. Every night at three o´clock Julia heard a low whistle outside the house. Helen couldn´t sleep that night because she had a strange feeling, suddenly she heard a loud scream from her sister, she ran away, suddenly, she heard a low whistle and a clang of metal. Julia fell to the floor and said to Helen: “It was the band the as the speckled band” Dr. Roylott ran out of his room and tried to save her, but she ended up dying. But not even the police had discovered how she had died. Holmes wanted to know more about Helen´s life. She said, that she had a lonely life and that a month before she was proposed to and that her stepfather had accepted. She should sleep in her sister´s room, as there would be a renovations in her room. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson decided to go to her house to do an investigation. Chapter Three Dr Roylott and Stone Moran Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, are finding whistling at night and the sound of metal very mysterious. They thought that Dr. Roylott might not want his stepdaughters, to get married because he didn´t want to give them the money. Holmes and Dr. Watson decided to go to Stoke Moran. Because they were very worried about Miss Stoner. Holmes asked Miss Stoner to show them the house, especially the bedrooms. Miss Stoner told them that her stepfather told her that from that day onwards she should sleep in her sister´s room and that the windows and doors were locked at night. Holmes entered Julia´s small room, sat in the corner of the room and locked around, saw a bell tired to a bell. Then he rang the bell and saw that it was fixed to the wall above the fan. Chapter Four A dangerous night In the garden of the house Sherlock Holmes spoke to Miss Stoner, and told her to follow her advice because he wanted to save her life, she was in danger. Holmes and Dr. Watson were staying at the in across the street and Miss Stoner was supposed to go to her room early that night, as soon as Dr. Roylott went to bed she would go to her own room through the window. As soon as they saw a light in the window, they run to Miss Stoner´s house. Holmes and Dr. Watson entered Julia´s room and were left in the dark and silent. At about three o´clock in the morning they heard a low whistle, Holmes´s face was white with terror. Holmes rang the bell several times and soon they heard a scream of terror and pain then there was silence. They run to Dr. Roylott´ room, he was sitting in a chair with her eyes open without moving and around her head there was a yellow band with brown spots. Whispered Holmes: The band! a speckled band! The speckled band was moved, it was the most dangerous snake in India and the doctor was dead from the snake bite. With her walking stick, Holmes threw the snake into the metal chest and closed it. Sherlock Holmes told Miss Stoner, everything he knew. Dr Roylott liked to breed animals from India, and the snake had venom that the police could not discover. It was a perfect way to kill someone. It was easy to put the snake on the fan, it came down the rope and bit Julia. As soon as the snake heard the whistle, he returned to the doctor, he gave the snake a bowl of milk and placed in the metal chest. It was this metal noise that Miss Stoner heard. Holmes heard a noise and realized that the snake was coming out of the fan, he hit the snake with her walking stick and it went back into the fan, she was very angry and they bite people when they feel threatened. When the snake returns to Dr. Roylott´s room, it ends up biting its own owner. Miss Stoner could hardly believe that her stepfather killed her sister and would kill her too if it weren´t for Sherlock Holmes, as he saved her life. Now that she was safe she went to live with her aunt in London.
