We use the Present Simple to describe habits, states in the present and things that are true in the present and probably won’t change. Examples: I wake up at 7 every day. (habit) My sister works downtown. (state) Water consists of hydrogen and oxygen. (no changes) Formation: We use the verb without “to” for I, you, we, they. Examples: I teach English at the University. My parents travel to Europe every year. Third person singular: For he, she, it, we add “s” to the verb without “to”. Examples: Susan knows French very well. Special cases: For verbs ending in “sh – ch – ss – x – o” we add “es: Carl teaches at a public school. June washes the car on Saturdays. Carol fixes things at home. The 5 bus passes on this street. The street goes up to the 7 th road. Now look at what happens with verbs ending in y preceded by a consonant: Study studies Examples: The baby cries all the night.
