Talking to co-workers
What ever company you work for, you will have a boss or a
manager.
In most cases, you will have to work with co-workers. When
you talk with a co-worker, most of it is small talk.
You can talk about your background, what school you
attended, your major and your previous work
experience.
1
Exemplo
Matt looks pretty upset right now. Do you know what's going on?
Did something happen recently? Matt looks upset.
I think Matt is mad about something. Do you know what it could be?
Matt is way too moody If he knew what he was doing, we wouldn't be in this mess.
What is wrong with Matt these days?
He is having one of those days again. I think his manager just gave him a hard time.
What do you think about our manager?

Dialogue situation
A: "How is your day going?"
B: "The same as usual. How about you?"
A: "Me too. I'm getting sick of work man."
B: "I'm already past that stage."
A: "What are you still doing here then?"
B: "It pays the bills."
A: "Why don't you nd another job?“
B: "Well, I thought about it, but if I put in two more years, then I get a good
pension. I can't give that up. Anyway, this job is boring, but at least it's easy."

A: "Well, you've been here for eight years. You have some things to stay for. I've
only been here for two years. I can't see myself doing this for another two years. I
want to gain more experience in other areas."
B: "Have you brought this up to the boss? Maybe you can go into management.“

A: "They usually want a person with an MBA degree or a person willing to put in
80 hours a week.“

B: "That's what it takes man. Either this or that."
Talking business
Many times you have to resolve problems and deal with tricky and dicult situations. Let’s analyze some useful phrases for
these hard times.
Tricky conversations
l'm not going to get into a discussion about...
Clearly...
What you need to do...
But bearing in mind...
I expect you to...
It's important that you...
l'm not happy with the effort that you've made.
I really want to see some improvement.
You've got to snap out of it. I know it's dicult...
Dialogue Situation: a tricky conversation
Michele: Okay, well, I’m not going to get into a discussion about who deserved
to get the job. Clearly, the person who was appointed was the right person for the
job. What you need to do is look at your work and what you’re doing and where
that’s taking you in your career. But bearing in mind that you are still employed to
do a job and I expect you to do that job with a certain attitude. You’re meeting
members of the public quite regularly - it’s important that you aren’t unhappy, or
at least that you don’t show it. This meeting is really just to let you know I’m not
happy with the effort that you’ve made... Paulo: Okay...
Michele: … and I really want to see some improvement. I know it’s dicult. I
know that it’s depressing not to get a job, but you’ve got to snap out of it, you’ve
got to get on with the job that you’re doing now. Paulo: ...

Resolving Difculties
I’ll come straight to the point.
I wasn’t particularly happy with…
Frankly…
Well…
I’ve seen very little change.
I’m afraid that…
Despite what you say…
I don’t want to jump to any conclusions.

Sean: Maria, can I have a word, please, in my oce?
Now then. I won’t take long about this, I’ll come straight
to the point. We had a chat...
Maria: Yeah.
Sean: At that point, I wasn’t particularly happy with the
way that you were behaving in the oce, the way that
you were being uncooperative, a little bit surly with
people. And since then, frankly, I’ve seen very little
change.
Maria: Well, I mean, I think I’ve made an effort, trying to
be helpful like I normally am with people, and I feel that
I’m still doing my job – not that the job’s very interesting.
I thinkit’s become less interesting since Sarah got the
promotion. I think she’s getting some more of the
interesting work.
Sean: Okay, well I’m afraid that, despite what you say, it
hasn’t come across. I don’t want to jump to any
conclusions, but you have taken quite a bit of time off…
and …
Maria: Yeah, but you’re allowed to take leave, aren’t you?
Sean: You are allowed to take leave. Hopefully you come
back from leave refreshed and you leave your problems
at home.
