Guidelines for Speaking Tests

DO’S

 The test should take approximately
5’- 6’ (pairs) or 7’ - 8’ (groups of three).

Teachers should read through the
Speaking Test script in advance.

Always refer to the Assessment Criteria.

 Greet students with a view to
establishing a friendly atmosphere.

 Be friendly and smile throughout the
test. Try to make students feel at ease.

 Do the test in pairs or in groups of
three.

 The examiner should always
demonstrate what is required to be done in
each part of the test.

 Follow the script on the information
sheet.

 Keep a brisk pace. Aim to stick to the
time limit.

 Students are assessed on their own
individual performance and not in relation
to each other.

 Assessment is based on performance in
the whole test and is not related to
particular parts of the test.

 At the end of the test just say:
Thank you. That is the end of the test.

DON’TS

Don’t speak Portuguese unless
communication is hindered.

Don’t always address the same St first.

 Don’t make any comments on St’s
performance.

 Don’t give all instructions at one go.
Give instructions whenever Sts have to do
something different. Always demonstrate
to students what they are suppose to do.

 Don’t penalise students for using short
answers or just a word or phrase.
