Chapter 1 Matter, Measurement, and Problem Solving 19 Data Interpretation and Analysis 1.155 (a) Using the information presented in Figure b, the density of solid ice at 0 °C is 918 kg/m³. Using the informa- tion presented in Figure a, the density of liquid water at 4 °C is 999.97 kg/m³. Since the density of the solid ice is less than the density of the liquid water, the ice will float. When the air temperature drops, the surface of the pond or lake will begin to freeze. This ice will float because the ice is less dense and fish can survive in 4 °C liquid water as long as there is enough dissolved oxygen in this water. (c) The density of solid ice at -20 °C is 919 kg/m³ and the density of liquid water at 4 °C is 999.97 The 919 kg/m3 volume of the water from Antarctica will be 26.5 X 10⁶ km³ X = 2.435423 X 10⁷ km³ = 2.44 X 10⁷ km³. 999.97 kg/m3 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc.
