Kilawea began erupting more than two weeks ago. It
has burned dozens of homes, forced people to escape
smoke and fire and led officials to distribute
face masks to protect against ash particles. Lava
flying the air from cracks in the earth can
weigh as much as a refrigerator and even small pieces
can be lethal. The lava streamed a highway and
flowed the ocean. That sent hydrochloric acid
with fine glass particles into the air, a process that
can lead to lung demage and eye and skin irritation.
The highway was closed in some places, and residents
in the area have been evacuated.

river in the days after a dam burst at an iron ore mine
this month Brazil’s worst environmental
disaster, according to tests by a state water agency,
the Institute for Water Management in Minas Gerais.
The agency found arsenic levels more than 10 times
above the legal limit in one place the river,
the Rio Doce, after the dam burst on Nov. 5, killing at
least 13 people. Mercury slightly above the permitted
level was also found in one area. Samarco, the mine
operator, and its co-owners, BHP Billiton and Vale,
have repeatedly said that the water and mineral waste
unleashed by the dam burst were not toxic. On
Wednesday, the United Nations human rights agency
said “new evidence” showed that the mud dumped by
the flood “contained high levels of toxic heavymetals
and other chemicals.”

Meet the 'homeless man' who flies the world first
class
For the last year and a half, Ben Schlappig has
been essentially homeless. The 25-year-old American
has fixed address, the keys to his own
front door. Why bother paying rent, he figured, when a
bed was only ever a first class ticket away?
Schlappig is a "Hobbyist," as those in the game call
it – a professional traveler with an almost obsessive
attention tofine print, who uses a mixture of frequent
flyer miles and credit card reward points, to zoom
around the globe for a fraction of the cost.
Since he first started racking up air miles a little
over a decade ago – yes, he was just 14 when he
started this –Schlappig says he's never flown economy
on an international flight.
