Anne Hughes arrived at work one March morning and waited outside for her boss to open up. Although she’d

retired some years earlier, she worked as a cleaner at a local 1 store in Wales. This particular

morning, she was leaning against the shutter with her shopping trolley when it began to open. Unbeknown to her,

her coat had become attached to the metal screen and as it slowly cranked open, it hoisted her coat up with it. In

a slight 2, she grabbed her shopping trolley in an attempt to steady herself, but it was no match

for the machinery and the trolley

went with her. Anne very quickly found herself dangling several feet above the

ground, clutching her shopping trolley and shouting at her boss to stop. Unfortunately, the noise drowned out her

pleas.

b. The entire incident was captured on security cameras and it wasn’t long before the clip 3 its

way to TikTok where the hilarious accident was able to be viewed by millions and received coverage in the press.

Thankfully, Anne was left unharmed, if a little disconcerted, by the episode. Her manager eventually heard her

cries for help and was able to 4 her down safely. ‘I’ll never hear the end of it,’ she joked. ‘My

boss has said he’s never liked his staff hanging around.’ Shortly afterwards, local graffiti artist Tee2Sugars, was

commissioned to immortalise the event on the 5 shutters where it happened. ‘Shop shutter gran’,

as Anne was dubbed, is said to be very proud of it.

c. As embarrassing episodes go, however, Anne Hughes got off lightly compared to another viral incident in 2017.

Liam Smith, a postgrad student in Bristol, went out for the evening with a woman he’d met on Tinder. For reasons

that will become clear, she was not 6. It was their second date and they enjoyed a meal and a few

drinks together as they got to know each other even more. With the evening having gone well, they decided to

adjourn to Smith’s flat to end the evening. On arrival, the woman asked to use the bathroom, 7

off a series of possibly the worst events that could happen in an early dating scenario.

d. The woman, having relieved herself, found that she was unable to 8 the poo. In a panic, she

scooped it out of the toilet with a plastic bag and jettisoned it out of the window into the garden. However, the

unpleasant package instead got wedged between two non-opening windows. Desperate to salvage the situation,

the woman then climbed up to try and retrieve the offending 9, but managed to get stuck herself

forcing her to ask Smith for help. Despite his best efforts he was unable to pull her out and was left with the only

option of calling the fire brigade for 10. Liam had to explain to the emergency responders what

had happened when they arrived. Ultimately, the firemen were able to free the ill-fated lady by carefully breaking

the window, but only after they had finished cracking up.

source: bbc.com

FOOOOTERLEFT 6/8Learn without forgetting!

Scan the QR at the top of Page 1 to review the lesson flashcards with Expemo.

© Linguahouse.com. Listening for details

Jamie: ... Talking of embarrassment, I’ve got a perfect example for you. So you know the fairly

modern trains in the UK where the toilet is close to the door and it’s operated by buttons?

Inside there’s a button that opens and closes the door and another that locks it? They’re

quite large and wheelchair accessible?

Dakota : Oh yeah, with the thing above the sink that gives youwater, and soap and dries your hands?

Jamie: Yes. So I was on one of those recently and it was quite busy, so a lot of peoplewere standing

up because they couldn’t get a seat. So this guy comes through and goes into the toilet.

Everyone was just looking at their phones and minding their own business. He disappears

into the toilet and the door shuts. So far, so good. No problem.

Dakota: Oh no. I’m feeling embarrassed already and I don’t know what happens.

Jamie: About a minute after he’d gone in, another guy comes around the corner and goes to use

the toilet too. He pushes the button and it slowly opens to reveal the first guy, sitting on

the toilet, trousers around his ankles. He’d forgotten to lock the door. He looks up to see

about fifteen strangers looking at him. He can’t do anything about it because he’s too far

away from the door. The second guy apologises and hits the button again and the door -

very slowly - closes again.

Dakota: (laughs) Oh my word! I’d want to curl up and die! What happened?

Jamie: Fifteen strangers fell about laughing is what happened. It was kind of beautiful as everyone

bonded over this poor guy’s humiliation. Of course, he then had to come out of the toilet

in front of everyone when he’d finished. When he came out, he said something like ‘Ha ha,

very funny,’ but very quickly got out of there, unsurprisingly.

Dakota: It’s interesting, isn’t it? Because I think anyone listening to that story would find it funny

and it’s because there’s a couple of things going on. Firstly, there’s the incongruous element

of seeing someone in such a personal situation in a public setting. Then there’s the relief

that you’re not the one that it’s happening to.

Jamie: That’s right. And later I wondered if he ever saw the funny side. He seemed quite resentful

when he came out, and you can understand why. No one wants to be laughed at by people,

but in a lot of ways he exacerbated the situation by being so po-faced about it. Some

people started laughing even more when he reacted against the situation which made him

look even more foolish.

Dakota: Well, yes. There’s quite a tradition in our culture of laughing at self-importance too. We

love to take people down a peg or two. So, by trying to regain some dignity, he made

everyone want to laugh at him more. Everyone’s just seen you on the toilet. I mean, there’s

just no coming back from that one, is there?

FOOOOTERAPPENDIXRIGHT iLearn without forgetting!

Scan the QR at the top of Page 1 to review the lesson flashcards with Expemo.

© Linguahouse.com. I’m sure it preyed

on his mind for days afterwards. But I’d be willing to bet that if the people there saw him

half an hour later, theywouldn’t have recognised him. The humour came from the situation,

there was nothing personal

about it. You could have swapped him for absolutely anyone

else and it would still have been funny.

FOOOOTERAPPENDIXLEFT iiLearn without forgetting!

Scan the QR at the top of Page 1 to review the lesson flashcards with Expemo.

© Linguahouse.com.
