English at work
What do these people have in common - a banker in Mexico City, a waiter
in a five-star hotel in Moscow, and a worker in the Hitachi electronics factory
in Tokyo? They all speak English at work. Today, English is the common
language in multinational companies in countries from France to Singapore.
|ean-Paul Piat works fbr an IT company in Paris. Every day he has meetings
with other managers in English. He also reads documents and writes emails
in English, and speaks on the phone in English to offices in other countries.
'We're
a multinational company with offices all over the world,' says
Jean-Paul.'We also have some people in our Paris office who aren't
French. We need a common language to communicate, and that
language is English. I think it is a good idea, but some people dont like
speaking English in a meeting when nearly everybody is Frenchl

What did people all over the world do last Sunday?
**: ryT lPg l:: ::: li:::ll *:51:
Last Sunday I got up at 9.J0 in the morning. I had a cup of
coffee and read the Sunday newspaper. Then I made breakfast.
We had eggs and bacon. We always have a big breakfast on
Sunday, but then we don't have lunch.
In the afternoon the weather was beautiful, and we went for
a long walk in the park.
In the evening when our son was in bed my husband and
I made dinner together. Then we talked about our day and
laughed a lot. We went to bed early because we were tired,
and we start work early on Monday.

I CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THIS TEXT?
In February last year we stayed one night at the
lce Hotel in Kiruna, in Sweden. lt was a fantastic
experience!
The hotel is made of ice and snow! But don't worry
about the cold. lt was -29 degrees outside but
in the hotel it was always -5 degrees. We wore
big coats and the temperature wasn't a problem.
At night we slept on a bed made of ice but in a
sleeping bag. We weren't cold at all. There was a
shower in the bathroom but no bath. We slept well
and in the morning there was a big Swedish breakfast.
But there were some problems. The restaurant
was very expensive and the service was very slow
- we waited an hour for our starters. Maybe it was
a bad night!
What is there to do in the hotel? There aren't any TVs
but there is an ' ice bar'. Here you can have a cocktail
in an ice glass! lt isn't cheap but it 's an experience.
There's also a spa and sauna. Have a sauna before
you go to bed. lt 's wonderful!
We had a great t ime at the lce Hotel, but one night
was enough!

Narrator Hammerfest is a small town in the
north of Norway. It is about 1,000 kilometres
north of the Arctic Circle. Only 9,407 people
live here. In the winter it is light for onlytwo or
three hours. People have breaKast, lunch, and
dinner in the dark In the summer, it is light for
24 hours, and people go to bed very late. Some
people play golf in the midnight sun!
Knut-Arne Iversen is from Hammerfest.
He works for the Tourist Information Office.
Interviewer Do a lot of tourists come to
Hammerfest?
Knut-Arne Yes, about 175,000 ayear.
Interviewer When do they usually come?
Knut-Arne In the summer. We don't have a
lot of tourists in the winter!
Interviewer ls the winter very cold?
Knut-Arne No, notvery about -3 degrees. But
we sometimes have a lot of snow and the
streets and schools are closed.
Interviewer What do people do in the winter?
Knut-Arne We do a lot of sports - we ski
a lot and we have snowmobiles. Children
usually play outside, but if it's very cold,
they play inside on their computer or watch
TV. In the evening we usually stay at home
and relax, or go and see friends. But the
winter is difficult for old people.
Interviewer What do people do in the summer?
Knut-Arne Life is completely different. It's
light for 24 hours a day, and the weather
is sometimes very hot. People are outside
all the time. We fish, and walk, and have
barbecues. We dont swim because the
water is very cold - maybe only ten degrees.
People dont sleep a lot, and young children
say'I don't want to go to bed. It isnt darkl
Interviewer Do you prefer the summer or the
winter?
Knut-Arne In the winter it's nice to be at
home with your family and friends. But I
prefer the summer.
Interviewer Do you like life in Hammerfest?
Knut-Arne Yes. Life here is easy. It's quiet
and beautiful. and the air is clean. But the
winter is very long, and the summer is very
short. I'm not sure if I will stay here forever.

Interviewer Mr Soriano, what differences
are there between Benidorm today and
Benidorm in the 1950s?
Mr Soriano There are very big differences.
For example, today there are 65,000 people
who live in Benidorm. In the 1950s there
were only about 3,000 people.
Interviewer Wow! That's a big difference!
What about tourists?
Mr Soriano Today there are four million
tourists ayear. In the 1950s there were only
maybe 300 tourists. And they were Spanish.
Now tourists come from all over the world.
Interviewer Was there an airport near
Benidorm in the 1950s?
Mr Soriano Nq there wasrit an airport then. Tirday
there is a big international airport in Alicante,
which is only 50 kilometres from Benidorm.
Interviewer How many hotels are there now?
Mr Soriano There are I28 hotels in the town.
Interviewer That's a lot! And in the 1950s?
Mr Soriano In the 1950s there were only three.
Interviewer Benidorm is famous for its
nightlife. How many bars are there?
Mr Soriano About 600! In the 1950s I think
there were maybe only ten bars in the
village, and there wasnt a supermarket,
only some little shops. Today there are 264
supermarkets and hundreds of shops.
Interviewer Thank you, Mr Soriano.
Mr Soriano You're welcome.

English friend How was your weekend,
Kelly? What did you do?
Kelly We went to Blackpool.
English friend Blackpool? Why Blackpool?
Kelly Well, somebody told us that Blackpool
was like Benidorm... in Spain. Well, maybe
it is in the summer, but it certainly isnt in
April. The weather was terrible! And a lot of
places were closed, you know the restaurants
and cafds. There was nothing to do.
English friend Where did you stay? In a hotel?
Kelly I wanted to stay in a good hotel, but Jeff
wanted something typically English so we
stayed in a bed and breakfast.
English friend How was it?
Kelly Well, the room was really small. And
the breakfast was terrible!
English friend Terrible? English breakfasts
are usually very good!
Kelly Yes, and that's what we wanted, a typical
English breaKast, you know bacon and eggs,
sausages. But there was only cereal, cold
toast, and tea. There wasnt any coffee! I tell
you, the weekend was a complete disaster.

Female broadcaster And here's Mark with
the weather.
Mark Well tomorrow is going to be a very
mixed day. In the north of England it's
going to be cold, maybe no more than three
or four degrees and it's probably going to
snow. In the east it's also going to be cold,
but it isnt going to snow, it's going to rain.
So remember to take an umbrella if you
live in the east of England. In the south
and the west the weather is going to be
very different. In the west it's going to be
a beautiful day. Its going to be cold, but
it's going to be sunny. And in the south it's
going to be sunny too, and it's going to be
hot, maybe 20 degrees. So I hope you all
have a good day...
