UNIVERSIDADE VEIGA DE ALMEIDA FÁBIO ROBERTO SANTOS ENTREGA DA AVALIAÇÃO - TRABALHO DA DISCIPLINA [AVA 2] Analyzing Coursebooks Rio de Janeiro-RJ 2023 1. INTRODUCTION Textbooks, including English language textbooks, are always filled with images that show everyday life and how a normal conversation can develop. However, it is important to recognize the need for students to see themselves in the reality shown in the books. Black people, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities often do not have a voice in these books. We will analyze Unit 1 of High Up 2 according to the provided link. 2. PEOPLE OF COLOR WITHOUT PROPER HIGHLIGHTING. The lack of diversity in the illustrations in the English textbook is a problem because it does not reflect the reality of such a mixed-race people with a large black population. This lack of representation can cause a sense of unimportance and invisibility. The only prominent representation of black people in the textbook unit is in the Ayiti: The Coast of Life game, and this is another problem because it can convey the message that this is the only way Africa can be represented. It is important to remember that Africa is a continent with great cultural and ethnic diversity, just like Brazil. It is important for black people to be represented with various portraits of our society, from the student to the successful worker, depicting the variety of experiences and cultures present. It is important for educators and students to begin questioning the lack of diversity in textbooks and find ways to include it. 3. LGBTQIAP+ INDIVIDUALS EXCLUDED. In the same unit, the lack of LGBTQIAP+ representation in textbooks is another concerning issue that needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, it is common for these materials to not include characters, examples, or information about non- traditional families and the diversity of gender and sexuality. Textbooks have the power to convey the normality of everyday situations to students, and the lack of representation can lead to a hostile school environment for LGBTQIAP+ individuals, contributing to an increase in school bullying. There is still much to be done to ensure that diversity of gender and sexuality is fairly and appropriately represented in educational materials. This includes teacher training and the creation of public policies that guarantee an inclusive and prejudice-free education for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity. 4. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. People with disabilities are often silenced, repressed, and subject to prejudice in their daily lives, and they also suffer from a lack of accessibility, as most places are not prepared for them. The lack of representation in textbooks seems to reinforce this. In addition to affecting the self-esteem and identity of people with disabilities, who often do not see themselves adequately and fairly represented in the media and culture. 5. CONCLUSION That's why it is important for all of us as teachers to analyze what we pass on to our students in the classroom. It is our duty to try to change what we believe is wrong pedagogically speaking. 6. REFERENCES DIAS, Reinildes; JUCÁ, Leina; FARIA, Raquel. High Up 2. São Paulo: Macmillan, 2015.
