Present continuous and Past continuous Present Continuous We use the present continuous tense to talk about something that is happening at the moment of speaking. You are reading now. I am studying English now. Present Continuous Subject + To Be + Verb –ING I am listening to music. Some verbs suffer a few small changes when we add –ING to them: Present Continuous Make the present continuous: 1. (she / go home now) 2. (I / read a great book) 3. (she / not / wash her hair) 4. (the cat / chase mice?) 5. (she / cry?) 6. (he / not / study Latin) 7. (we / drive to London?) 8. (they / watch TV? ) 9. (where / she / go now? ) 10. (I / not / leave now) Present Continuous Change the following sentences into the present continuous tense. 1. I write novels. 2. She works at a bank. 3. We buy vegetables from the market. 4. The boys play in the garden. 5. She writes with her left hand. 6. My mother makes delicious cookies. 7. My sister lives abroad. 8. She works hard to make a living. 9. She speaks English. 10. The river flows under the bridge. Past Continuous We use the past continuous tense to describe actions that were in progress at a certain time in the past. I was studying for a test last night. She was cooking dinner at 7:00 yesterday. We often use the past continuous tense to describe an action that was interrupted by another action in the past. The longer action is in the past continuous. I was studying for a test when she called. They were coming home when the accident happened. Past Continuous Make the past continuous: 1. (Julie / sleep at three o’clock) 2. (you / study at three o’clock) 3. (Luke / read at three o’clock) 4. (I / work at three o’clock) 5. (they / eat chocolate at three o’clock) 6. (Mr. and Mrs. Green / not / eat in the dining room when the murder happened) 7. (Mr. Blue / not / drink coffee in the library when the murder happened) 8. (the maid / not / clean the bedrooms when the murder happened) 9. (I / not / listen to music when the murder happened) 10. (the dogs / not / play outside when the murder happened) Past Continuous: Answers 1. Julie was sleeping. 2. You were studying. 3. Luke was reading. 4. I was working. 5. They were eating chocolate. 6. Miss Green and her brother weren’t eating in the dining room. 7. Mr. Blue wasn’t drinking coffee in the library. 8. The maid wasn’t cleaning the bedrooms. 9. I wasn’t listening to music. 10. The dogs weren’t playing outside. Past Continuous or Past Simple? Choose the past simple or past continuous: 1. When I walked into the room, everyone was working
