I am grateful to my collaborators, students, and trainees. In particular, Francisco 
Urbano has been a driving force behind many of our studies. They have per-
formed the studies that allowed us to understand arousal and how it affects brain 
function in health and disease. I am forever grateful and wish all of them long 
and productive careers. Rebeka Henry and Melanie Tucker at Elsevier were 
extremely helpful and supportive in the publication of this book, my sincere
