I wish to acknowledge those people who directly or indirectly contributed
to this book. I am indebted to R. M. Lauver for his continuous encourage
ment to teach and to publish; to J. K. Wolf for his instruction and allow
ing me to use his lecture notes which guided my presentation of material;
to B. P. Bogert for his moral support during preparation of the final draft;
and especially to G. H. Robertson for making available to me his reper
toire of computer programs, which were extensively used for numerical
computations; to J. D. Patterson for a critical reading of the final draft; to
Miss N. Lockwood for faithfully typing many versions of the manuscript
over a period of five years ; to the manuscript reviewers from Bell Tele
phone Laboratories for their helpful comments. But most of all, I want to
thank my wife and my children, who have been patient and understanding
beyond measure. This book is dedicated to them.
