- Oh, how are you?
- Not good! Humans are dirtying me.

- They are actually harming our ecosystem!
- Oh, that reminds me about today’s topic: Ecosystem! Come, let me tell you all about it! ZOOM IN!
“Ecosystem is a Community of living organisms along with their natural habitat and the non-living components of their environment. This network of living and non-living components in a given area is known as a ecosystem.
An ecosystem could be pond, could be your house as well. And some believe that our Earth is an ecosystem too!
Ecosystem includes two major components: Biotic and Abiotic components. Abiotic components are the non-living elements of the system. Such as air, water, sunlight, nutrients and temperature. Biotic components are all the living organisms living in the system. Like plants, animals, fungi, micro-organisms and you!
Ecosystem can be of any size: the area under your plant pot, under this rock, a pond, a puddle, the vast ocean, the city you live in or your country.
Take the area under a rock, for example. In this ecosystem, you’ll find biotic components like micro-organisms, insects, and abiotic components like soil, nutrients, air, etc!

Did you know that even you are an ecosystem?
Yes, you are an ecosystem to the thousands of micro-organisms tha inhabit you!
Our ecosystem is really important. If we keep polluting our ecosystem like that, we would soon go extinct and Earth wouldn’t be habitable ecosystem ever!

c) Search on a dictionary – or Google translator – the words you don’t know and write the meanings in your notebook. (Pesquise em um dicionário – ou Tradutor Google – as palavras que você não conhece e escreva os significados em seu caderno.)
d) Read the text again. In the text, circle the words that are similar in form to Portuguese. (Leia o texto novamente. Circule no texto as palavras que são parecidas com a forma em Português.)
e) Now, using a dictionary, search the words you circled in the last activity and see if its meaning is the same as in Portuguese. (Agora, usando um dicionário – pode ser o Tradutor Google, busque as palavras circuladas na atividade anterior e verifique se os significados são os mesmos em Português.)
