The Simple Past is used for actions that started and
finished at a specific time in the past. It’s also
possible to use the simple past in a sentence
without specifying a time, but it must have
previously been made clear that the speaker is
referring to a finished period.
R e g u l a r V e r b
In order to convert regular verbs from their base form to the simple past form, we add
-ed. And when a verb ends in a consonant and -y, we change the -y to -i and add -ed.
place – placed
dance – danced
snow – snowed
rain – rained
need – needed
help – helped
worry – worried
play – played

For irregular verbs, however, the simple past form doesn’t follow this rule and can vary
significantly and you simply need to learn them by use.
be – was/were
have - had
buy – bought
come – came
do – did
eat – ate
find – found
go – went
Q u e s t i o n
To make questions in the simple past we use ‘did’ in front of the
subject and base form of the verb.

For example:
Did you play football yesterday?
Did they lose the match?
Did he clean his home last weekend?
N e g a t i v e
To make negative negative sentences in the simple past we use the
auxiliary ‘did not’ / ‘didn’t’ and the base form of the verb.

Subject + did not + base form of verb + object

For example:
I didn’t play football yesterday.
They didn’t go to the theater last month.
She didn’t arrive on time this morning.

Anna had a wonderful vacation last summer. She traveled to a beautiful beach with
her family. They stayed in a nice hotel. Every morning, Anna and her family woke up
early. They ate breakfast together and then went for a walk on the beach. In the
afternoons, they went swimming in the sea. Anna splashed in the waves and collected
seashells. Sometimes, they played beach volleyball together. In the evenings, they
enjoyed delicious seafood dinners at seaside restaurants. Anna tried lobster for the
first time and loved it!
On the last day of their vacation, they watched a stunning sunset over the ocean. Anna
felt sad to leave, but she was grateful for the unforgettable memories they had made
together.

It was hard to say goodbye to his colleagues and the routine he had used to. As Luke
arrived at the office for the final time, he was greeted by his coworkers with smiles and
well wishes.
Luke reflected on his time at the company. He remembered the challenges he had
overcome. He also took the opportunity to thank his colleagues for their support and
friendship over the years.
As he walked out of the office for the last time, Luke felt grateful for the experiences he
had gained and the friendships he had formed. He knew that this chapter of his life
was closing, a new one was about to begin.
