viii Preface Note on the Sixth Edition The sixth edition of Organic Chemistry includes many new problems. Additional worked-out exercises ("Working with the Concepts") have been included in each chapter. At the end of each chapter is at least one completely worked- out "Chapter Integration" problem. Finally, the end-of-chapter problem sets have been further expanded throughout the book. The emphasis in all cases is to encourage the student to develop problem-solving skills. Those of you fa- miliar with previous editions of this Study Guide will recognize the format used for the solutions to these new prob- lems. They are designed to lead the student to think about each problem in stages-considering possible approaches, seeing where they lead, evaluating how productive they are, and finally going on to the next step. As were many of the original solutions in the Study Guide, these new solutions are intended to serve as "thought maps" to demon- strate the way successful strategies may be developed. If students use this volume not as a simple answer manual but indeed as a guide, I believe that they will have more success in navigating this challenging course. Acknowledgments As always, I am indebted to many individuals who have found and helped me correct mistakes in the earlier edi- tions of the Study Guide. Professor K. Peter C. Vollhardt and his students at the University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues and students of mine here at the University of California, Davis, have all provided valuable assis- tance. Dr. Melekeh Nasiri deserves special credit for always being on the lookout for errors and inconsistencies. A great debt of thanks also goes to the friendly and helpful team at W.H. Freeman and all the reviewers they've pro- vided for this edition. As usual, my personal thanks go out to my wife, Carrie, and my not-so-small-any-longer children, Mike the com- puter wizard, and Stef the violin virtuoso, for letting me make my usual mess of things with drafts and proofs and models and journals all over the place. You can all have the house back now, at least for a couple of years. Neil E. Schore Davis, California
