Let’s
Grab a
Coffee
During this class you will:
• Discuss socializing in
coffee shops.
• Create a coffee shop
menu.
• Talk about fair trade
coffee.
Warm-up- Do you drink coffee? Why or why not?
- How often do you drink coffee? At what time of
the day?
- What do you order when you go to a coffee
shop?
Warm-up
Share your thoughts.
And you
can
quote
me…
And you can quote me…
Read and answer the questions.
"We want to do a lot of stuff; we’re not in great
shape. We didn’t get a good night’s sleep. We’re
a little depressed. Coffee solves all these
problems in one delightful little cup."
-- Jerry Seinfeld
(American Comedian, born 1954)
- What does this quote mean to you?
- Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?
- What other problems do you think coffee might solve?
- How do you solve small day-to-day problems like
these?
Speak
your
mind.
Besides just being a place to get a great cup of
coffee, many people go to coffee shops for their
quiet, relaxing atmosphere.
Which is better?
- Going out for coffee on a date or going out for
dinner?
- Studying in a coffee shop or studying at home?
- Meeting a client in a coffee shop or meeting them in
an office?
What other social situations might a coffee shop
be good for?
Speak your mind.
Share your thoughts and opinions.
Imagine
that!
Your class is opening a coffee shop! As a class,
you will create a menu for your new business.
Consider items from these categories:
- Drinks
- Snacks
- Breakfast
- Lunch
- Dinner
- Desserts
- Explain why you think the items you choose
would be successful.
- Choose one item to be your specialty*. Explain
your choice.
*specialty = The best dish; the dish a restaurant is known for
Imagine that!
As a class, create a story.
1. Do you think coffee is popular because of its taste or
the caffeine? Explain.
2. Do you think coffee is healthy? Are other caffeinated
drinks, like tea, healthy? Is decaffeinated coffee?
3. How does caffeine affect you?
4. How much coffee do you think is "too much"? Do
people in your culture drink more than this?
5. Do you prefer to make coffee at home or buy it from
a coffee shop? Why?
6. What are some popular coffee shops where you live?
Describe them.
7. Have you ever tried coffee in another country? How
does it compare to coffee from your country?
Answer me this!
Take turns asking each other questions.
Before you
go!
Coffee prices fluctuate a lot which can be very
difficult for small farmers. Fair trade coffee is
intended to protect small farmers by setting a
minimum price that it can be sold for. This ensures
the coffee growers are selling their coffee for a
price that will cover their production costs.
Fair trade also encourages environmental
sustainability and prohibits child and forced labor.
Many argue this goes against free market
principles.
- Is coffee grown in your country? Is it grown by small- or
large-scale farmers?
- Have you ever heard of fair trade products? Have you
ever bought them? Would you?
- Do you think fair trade products are overall a positive
or negative thing for society?
- Do you think it's important to consider how the things
you buy were produced? Why?
Before you go!
Here’s some cultural fun:
1. What did you like most today?
2. What do you need to improve on?
3. What did you do well on today?
