Coffee prices fluctuate a lot which can be very difficult for small farmers. Fair trade coffee is intended to protect small farmers by setting a minimum price that it can be sold for. This ensures the coffee growers are selling their coffee for a price that will cover their production costs. Fair trade also encourages environmental sustainability and prohibits child and forced labor. Many argue this goes against free market principles. - Is coffee grown in your country? Is it grown by small- or large-scale farmers? - Have you ever heard of fair trade products? Have you ever bought them? Would you? - Do you think fair trade products are overall a positive or negative thing for society? - Do you think it's important to consider how the things you buy were produced? Why? Before you go!
