Austrian Felix Baumgartner is the world's best-known BASE*
jumper and an extreme sports legend. He holds the world
records for high and low parachute jumps from buildings,
bridges, and other structures. In 1999, he jumped off the
Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The towers are
452 meters (1,483 feet) high. In the same year, he also jumped
from the Corcovado statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue
is only 30 meters (98 feet) high! That's low!
There's more! In 2003, Baumgartner crossed the
English Channel between England and France in
freefall from an altitude of 10,000 meters 83,000
feet). For most ofthe journey, he flew at 220
kilometers (137 miles) an hour-with a carbon
fin, an oxygen tank, and a parachute on his back!
He made the 35-kilometer (22-mile) journey from
Dover, England to Calais, France in just 14 minutes!
"How did I prepare for the flight?" said Felix.
"I tied myself to the top of a speeding Porsche!"
