Norwegian Jo En, ei og et I am not a professional – there might be mistakes or typos. I’m just trying to provide some helpful resources:) En, ei and et: Norwegian Nouns and their Genders Introduction There are three grammatical genders in Norwegian. All nouns are split into these categories. They are hankjønn (masculine), hunkjønn (feminine) and intetkjønn (neuter). Conjugation Nouns in hankjønn, hunkjønn and intetkjønn Endings in red à added at the end of root *Note: Most intetkjønn words of more than one syllable receive the “-er” ending in the indefinite plural form. Although this is not true 100% of the time. Exceptions The rules above are not consistent with all Norwegian nouns, as many are irregular and therefore have special conjugations that can be found in a dictionary. Hunkjønn is optional Regular hunkjønn nouns can also be conjugated using the word endings of hankjønn. It is optional whether you choose to say “ei jente” or “en jente”. You can also choose to say “jenten” instead of “jenta”. Some dialects prefer to stick with hunkjønn conjugation, while others consistently conjugate hunkjønn nouns using the hankjønn endings.
