Conversation Charlie: Heather, we need to get started on that movie project. It’s got to be something really good! Heather: Not like that terrible movie I saw last night. It was a waste of time. Charlie: What was it called? Heather: It’s so bad that I forgot the name. Something about “lost hope”. It was so gory. There was blood and shooting all the time. Charlie: Oh, now I know what you’re talking about. The acting was just awful. Heather: It was! I can’t stand overacting. They exaggerate every line. Charlie: That’s definitely something to avoid in our project. Heather: I was thinking we could produce a very tragic and romantic story, like The English Patient or something. Charlie: No way. Heather: Ok, what can I do…? I got it! Oh, this is going to be a box office hit, I can feel it. Charlie: Remember we have limited funds. Heather: It won’t need a lot of special effects. Charlie: What’s your brilliant idea? Heather: A murder mystery… documentary style! Charlie: Nooo! Documentaries are so boring. Heather: No, listen. It will be documentary style. As if we were following a real police investigation. Charlie: Cool, but how are we going to cover the production costs? We have to hire a cast, and actors are expensive. Heather: We’ll hire amateurs. Charlie: I like the way you think, Heather. Heather: You know what they say: great minds think alike! Vocabulary Simple Past We use the simple past to refer to concluded actions in the past. Routine Past I work everyday. I went to the park yesterday. I study English at night. I studied Spanish last year I live in Macaé. I was born in 1986. The auxiliar for the Simple Past is “Did”. When we use DID in an interrogative or negative sentence, the verb will not change. Ex: I didn’t go to the beach yesterday. (In the negative sentence, we need to use “Didn’t”, and when we use the auxiliar, the verb “GO” will be in the normal form) Did you like the movie? There are regular and irregular verbs. In the Simple Past, the regular verbs are simply put in the past by adding an ED in the end of the verb. Ex: Present – Study Present – Watch Present - Try Past – Studied Past – Watched Past – Tried Note: Regular verbs that end in “Y” and have a consonant before, like STUDY, when put in the past, you remove the “Y” and add “IED”. Structure of the Simple Past Affirmative Negative Interrogative Subject + Verb + ED (In case of regular verb) Subject + Didn't Did + Subject Verb to be in the past Am – Was Is – Was Are – Were Used to We use this to talk about habits/routines in the past (You don’t do this situation in the present) Eg: I used to play with my friend when I was a child. She used to call her boyfriend every day. My father used to work at Petrobras. Irregular verbs Exercises 1.
