Thomas Paine was one of the fundamental advocates of the American cause for independence. Choose the
option that correctly states why Thomas Paine's Common Sense is an important historical text:
Because it rejected religion in favor of a completely secular view of the world.
Because it indicated different reasons for America to separate from England.
Because it illustrated the moral superiority of Americans in relation to the English.
Because it justified the implementation of abusive laws by the English.
Because it showed Americans the importance of organizing troops.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 12:49:23

Explicação:
Paine's text is composed of several reasons - some logical, some very creative - that justify America's
separation from England. Some of these are the geographical distance between the two countries and the fact
that the Reformation happened before the discovery of America. The correct answer is then: "Because it
indicated different reasons for America to separate from England".

Benjamin Franklin embodied the American ideal of the ¿self-made man¿. Choose the option that correctly
explains why the latter sentence holds true:
Because he accepted the risks of becoming an inventor.
Because he used his influence to discuss the problems of his time.
Because he worked in literature as well as in politics.
Because he succeeded through his determination and industry.
Because he wrote about the daily lives of American people.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 12:52:24

Explicação:
Franklin is seen as a self-made man because he personifies the American ideal of someone who is born poor
and, through his hard work, determination, and efforts, achieves success. The correct answer is thus: "Because
he succeeded through his determination and industry".

"Westward expansion began in earnest in 1803. Thomas Jefferson negotiated a treaty with France in which the United
States paid France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory - 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River -
effectively doubling the size of the young nation. The lands acquired stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky
Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border(...) American artists explored this new territory and
chronicled the settlement of the frontier: landscapes extolling the nation's geographic wonders from Niagara Falls to the
Grand Canyon drove and documented westward expansion"
Retrieved from: https://americanexperience.si.edu/historical-
eras/expansion/#:~:text=Westward%20expansion%20began%20in%20earnest,size%20of%20the%20young%20nation.

The westward expansion was justified by a quite American doctrine: Manifest destiny. The doctrine of Manifest Destiny is
characterized by the idea that:
Nationalism was to be the central feature of the nation.
Capitalism is considered the best economic system.
Christianity should be the official religion of the US.
Democracy was the founding principle of the country.
Territorial expansion over North America is a divine right.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 12:54:16

Explicação:
Answer: Territorial expansion over North America is a divine right.
Feedback: According to the doctrine of Manifest Destiny, the US was destined by God to spread its population all over
North America, bringing their values to new territories (which were considered underdeveloped). The correct answer is
then: "territorial expansion over North America is a divine right".

"Frederick Douglass, original name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, (born February 1818, Talbot county,
Maryland, U.S.-died February 20, 1895, Washington, D.C.), African American abolitionist, orator, newspaper
publisher, and author who is famous for his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an
American Slave, Written by Himself."
Retrieved from: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederick-Douglass

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass can be associated to the work of Benjamin Franklin because of its:
focus on an individual in search of opportunities.
emphasis on the accumulation of wealth.
presentation of the importance of industry.
ironic style in presenting a narrative.
insistence on nationalist ideals.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 12:56:08

Explicação:
Answer: focus on an individual in search of opportunities.
Feedback: Douglass's autobiography resembles Franklin¿s in its portrayal of a single individual who trusts his
own self and sees the United States as a land of opportunity and, therefore, struggles to search for his own
version of success.

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman paved the way for American modernism. Bearing this information in mind,
choose the alternative that best compares and contrasts their production:
Their production is akin, as both were poets of public discourse.
Their production diverges, since only Whitman knew how to occupy the page.
Their production diverges, since Whitman was the poet of silence, whereas Dickinson was the poet of
public discourse.
Their production is akin, as both were poets of silence.
Their production diverges, since Whitman was the poet of public discourse, whereas Dickinson was the
poet of silence.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 13:11:22

Explicação:
Answer: Their production diverges, since Whitman was the poet of public discourse, whereas Dickinson was the
poet of silence.
Feedback: Whitman was a poet of the public discourse, who used of the oral tradition of the collective, whereas
Dickinson was the poet of silence, who converted the lack of a powerful social voice into written poetry.
Dickinson, as well as her American women compatriots, knew that if they were being excluded from the pulpit
and from the public discussions, they were also being excluded from the political decisions of her times.
Therefore, the correct option is: "Their production diverges, since Whitman was the poet of public discourse,
whereas Dickinson was the poet of silence."

For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.

Above one can read the final verses of the famous Longfellow poem, "Paul Revere's Ride". Thinking about
Longfellow's innovative writing, we can say that "Paul Revere's Ride"...
... is a bad example of how Longfellow assessed the mythical past of the nation he was trying to
construct together with his readers.
... is a great example of the first American epics, written solely by Longfellow, who was tired out of the
European traditional forms of poetry.
... is a great example of how narrative devices are introduced into Longfellow¿s poetry in order to
establish a mythical past for America.
... is an example of the European conventions of poetry that Longfellow was fond of in his early writing
career.
... is a great example of the new rhythm of American poetry, embodied in the combination of past and
present stories reverberating with European tradition.

Feedback: Paul Revere's ride refers to the famous XIX century horse ride in which, during the middle of the
night, he was responsible for alerting the American villages on the shore of New England about the upcoming
British army on their ships at sea. Longfellow choses a story which was already starting to settle in the collective
mythical imaginary past of the United States. By doing this he develops narrative devices into poetry, writing
them under the rhythmic gallop of the irregular metric, allowing the poet to sum up the events which he
managed to depict throughout his poem in a concise manner. It is thus a great example of how narrative
devices are introduced into Longfellow's poetry in order to establish a mythical past for America.

"Bartleby, the Scrivener", depicts a man who is a copyist, a profession that demands people to copy
documents by hand, an equivalent of a photocopy machine of the 19th century. One characteristic of Bartleby
is his ____________________.

Choose the best option to fill the gap
joy
cooperation
energy
obedience
 dehumanization
Respondido em 31/08/2022 13:28:24

Explicação:
The employee, Bartleby, isolates and alienates himself from work, people and the world itself. He incorporates
the purpose of his position, transforming himself in a human machine. In the first days at the office, Bartleby
works very well, demonstrating cooperation, obedience, energy, and joy; however, he gradually disentangles his
being from the nets of work, family, friends and class.

"Romanticism, attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature, painting,
music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization over a period from the late 18th to the
mid-19th century "
Source: https://www.britannica.com/art/Romanticism

What did the Romantic writers praise in their writings?
reason
analysis
faith
 imagination
logic
Respondido em 31/08/2022 13:36:14

Explicação:
Romantic writers considered the literature of the 1700s mechanical, impersonal and artificial due to its focus on
a rational, analytical, and logical writing. Besides, the faith in religion, Puritanism, in the case of the United
States, was also disregarded by Romantics. Imagination and emotion were of paramount importance to
Romantics and their writings. Therefore, the correct answer is "imagination".

In Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, critics such as Edmund Wilson and Harold C. Goddard formulate,
each in their own way, a "hallucination theory" to explain the Governess' accounts of ghost apparitions at the
Bly mansion.

Choose the alternative that defines this theory:
The children are, in fact, products of the Governess' dream, as revealed at the end.
The house members feed on products that lead them to altered psychological states.
The Governess' attempt to become an independent woman is reflected in her visions.
The Governess only trusts the version of the children, who are quite imaginative, to say the least.
The apparitions are built by the imagination of the Governess, who suffers from sexual repression.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 13:45:37

Explicação:
Wilson and Goddard were precursors of the analysis of Henry James' masterpiece from a psychological
perspective, following the theories of Sigmund Freud. According to the critics, there are no ghosts in the house.
They are, in fact, hallucinations caused by sexual disorders experienced by the Governess, who projects them
into the creation of these supernatural characters.

Realism is an artistic and literary movement that emerges in France, in the mid-nineteenth century, with the
aim of portraying reality according to its objective aspects, privileging the present, such as the daily life of the
middle class and the less prestigious strata of society. Thus, realists turn against romanticism and its
idealizations.
Choose the alternative that highlights some of the main features of the realism in Mark Twain's work:
Sophistication in the description of landscapes and characters without formal instruction.
Experimental language and characters that carry problems from the past.
Language of the population with little education and exaltation of heroic deeds.
Speech praising the United States and criticizing rural life.
Popular language and characters related to the context of slavery.
Respondido em 31/08/2022 13:50:57

Explicação:
Mark Twain became known for creating incredible characters and scenarios. And this is especially due to his
ability in transforming circumstances and real people, whom he met throughout his life, into literature. In
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain innovated by taking to such a prestigious literary form the dialects that
characterize the populations of the different North American regions, in addition to highlighting the place
destined to black people within society in the context before the Civil War.
