Veja alguns exemplos:
If only Chris had a job. (A pessoa que fala gostaria que 
Chris tivesse um emprego, mas ele não tem).
If only John would stop talking. (Nesse caso, a pessoa está 
reclamando; ela gostaria que John parasse de falar).
If only I had never started smoking. (O sujeito diz que 
gostaria de nunca ter começado a fumar. Com base na 
frase, sabemos que essa pessoa fumou ou ainda fuma). 
If only também é estruturalmente parecido com wish. 
Como é possível observar nos exemplos apresentados, 
usamos if only + Past Simple quando nos referimos a um 
desejo no presente ou no futuro; if only + would se nós que-
remos fazer uma reclamação; e if only + Past Perfect quando 
falamos de algo que gostaríamos que tivesse acontecido. 
I wish I hadn’ t thrown 
those books on the 
floor... Now I’ ll be 
grounded for hours.
If only I could

To the Editor: Re “Girl’s Death by Gunshot Is Rejected as Symbol” (new article, May 6):
I find it abhorrent that the people of Burkesville, Ky., are not willing to learn a lesson from the tragic shooting of a 
2-year-old girl by her 5-year-old brother. I am not judging their lifestyle of introducing guns to children at a young age, but I 
do feel that it’s irresponsible not to practice basic safety with anything potentially lethal – guns, knives, fire and so on. How 
can anyone justify leaving guns lying around, unlocked and possibly loaded, in a home with two young children? I wish the 
family of the victim comfort during this difficult time, but to dismiss this as a simple accident leaves open the potential for 
many more such “accidents” to occur. I hope this doesn’t have to happen several more times for legislators to realize that 
something needs to be changed.

Metáfora
Estudada nas aulas de Língua Portuguesa, a metáfora é uma figura de linguagem. Ao analisá-la, procuramos entender os sentidos figurados 
que foram criados por meio de comparações implícitas.
Exemplos de metáforas famosas: “meu pensamento é um rio subterrâneo” (Fernando Pessoa); "o amor é fogo que arde sem se ver" (Luís de 
Camões); "Iracema, a virgem dos lábios de mel" (José de Alencar).
Outras metáforas populares: aquela pessoa é uma cobra; meu amigo é um palhaço; a vida é uma estrada; viver um conto de fadas; você é uma 
luz na minha vida etc.
