When selfies are a BAD IDEA •··

111 cv,Ny situ,1tio11, you want to take a selfie. Selfies are fun, so what's the problem?
First, let's think ,1bout people. Other people are standing in front of the tourist attraction.
S 0 111 0 of them are tourists, some are loca l people. They probably don't want to be on your
soci,~I media page. Wait until they move away.
Think about the animais in your selfie, too. At the zoo, you want a selfie with an animal in the
background but the animal is sleeping . You wake the animal up and take the selfie. You're
happy but how is the animal feeling?
Are you safe? This is very important. lt's dangerous to take a selfie on top of a building. Some
bui ldings have a special place to stand outside and take photos. Make sure you get your selfiesafely1
Surely there's nothing wrong with a photo in front of a famous painting? No, it isn't dangerous,
but it can be annoying for other people in the gallery. They want to look at the painting. They
don 't want to look at you with your cell phone.
These four examples show us when selfies are wrong or dangerous, but do you know when
they are against t he law? Hundreds of people take selfies when they're driving a car. This
often ca uses accidents. ln many countries, it is now against the law to use a cell phone when
you're driving. Don 't do it-it's too dangerous.
Read the article. What does the writer think? Choose (✓) Yes or No.
1. Some people don't want to be in your photos at tourist attractions.
2. Taking photos of animais is nota problem.
3. You can sometimes take selfies on top of a building.
4. lt's wrong to ta ke selfies in art galleries.
5. Taking selfies in a car Is aga lnst the law in all countrles.

Jason is 24, and he 's studying to

I'm running. I run five miles

Mondays and Wednesdays I run
a few miles , too. Why do I run? I

Excuse me, but my lesson starts in five

Hi. My name is Sonia Gomez. I'm a new
student at the University ofTexas at Austin.
I'm studying French and German here in
Austin. I lave leaming languages. I also
speak Spanish because my parents are from
Puerto Rico. We speak Spanish at home.
Yesterday was my first day of class. It was
not a very good day. My alarm clock was
broken, so I was late for class. At lunchtime,
the cafeteria was crowded, and the lines were
long. I didn't eat lunch. Then the bookstore
was closed, and I couldn't buy my books.
That's my friend Ralph in the photo. He's
from NewYork. He's studying Portuguese
at the university. He was a good basketball
player in high school. Now he's playing on
the university basketball team. He's really
good at sports.
Last night there was a basketball game,
but Ralph wasn't there. The weather was
terrible, and his tire was flat. This morning
he was sick, so he wasn't in class. Tomorrow
Ralph and I are going to have a better day!
